What is a magnetic proximity switch?

A magnetic proximity switch is a position-sensing device that operates without any mechanical contact with the object being detected. It outputs a signal depending on the presence or absence of a magnet within its detection area. Because there is no physical contact and no moving lever to wear out, the switch offers a far longer service life than a conventional mechanical limit switch. International standards (IEC 60947-5-2) group magnetic types alongside inductive, capacitive, ultrasonic and photoelectric proximity switches, but the magnetic version stands apart for its simplicity, robustness and immunity to dust, dirt and moisture.

How a magnetic proximity switch works

The operating principle is straightforward. When a magnet approaches the switch, the internal sensing element reacts to the magnetic field and changes state; when the magnet moves away, the field weakens and the contact returns to its resting position. The sensing element is typically a reed switch with mechanical contacts, a Hall-effect sensor, or a magnetoresistive element whose resistance varies with the field.

Each magnetic sensor is available as a normally open (NO / a-contact) or normally closed (NC / b-contact) type. A normally open switch stays OFF until a magnet approaches and turns it ON, while a normally closed switch does the reverse. This flexibility lets you integrate the switch directly into safety circuits, PLC inputs or alarm systems.

Types of magnetic proximity switches

Magnetic proximity switches fall into two broad families. In the integrated vane type, the magnet and switch sit together in a U-shaped housing; switching occurs when a ferromagnetic vane passes through the slot and shields the magnetic path. In the separate type, the switch is fixed to the machine frame while the magnet travels on the moving part, so the contact operates each time the magnet passes. Cylindrical and memory versions extend the range further: cylindrical models suit compact mounting, and memory types hold their ON state after the magnet has passed. Compact magnetic field sensors are also widely used to detect piston position inside pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders, a classic and cost-effective automation task.

How to select the right magnetic proximity switch

When choosing a magnetic proximity switch, three parameters matter most: sensing distance, electrical rating and ambient temperature. The sensing distance is the gap between the switch face and the magnet at which reliable switching occurs; because magnet size determines field strength, the switch and magnet must always be matched as a set, with hysteresis (the difference between operate and release points) taken into account. The electrical specification depends on the built-in contact, so confirm the rated operating current and voltage for your load. Finally, check the permissible temperature range. high-temperature magnetic proximity sensors can operate up to 130 °C, while an IP 67 housing keeps water and dust out in demanding outdoor use.

Thanks to their contact-free, weather-independent design, magnetic proximity switches are found across industry: on railway equipment, in steel plants and power stations, on elevators, conveyors and pneumatic cylinders, and throughout crane and port applications. Typical tasks include end-position detection, door and gate monitoring, safety interlocks and travel-limit signalling. On cranes and heavy handling equipment, these switches complement radar-based collision avoidance systems by confirming discrete positions and end stops.
